How Do Crooked Teeth Affect My Dental Health?

11th January 2017

Crooked teeth are more than unsightly.  They can cause serious dental problems, not to mention emotional issues.

There are several reasons why some people’s teeth grow crooked, overlapping, or twisted.

Some people’s mouths are too small for their teeth, which crowds the teeth and causes them to shift.  In other cases, a person’s upper and lower jaws aren’t the same size or are not properly aligned.  This can result in an overbite where there is excessive protrusion of the upper jaw, or an under bite where the lower jaw protrudes forward.

Crowded, excessively spaced or misaligned teeth can wear unevenly over time and in some people, can cause the teeth to weaken and fall out.  Other problems associated with misaligned teeth include excessive wear, headaches, jaw pain, and difficulty in cleaning the teeth potentially causing an increase in tooth decay and gum disease.

Crooked teeth and misaligned bites can:

• Increase tooth wear

• Interfere with proper chewing.

• Make teeth cleaning difficult and increase the risk of tooth decay, cavities and gingivitis.

• Strain the teeth, jaws, and muscles, increasing the risk of breaking a tooth.

• Make people feel self-conscious about their appearance and affect their self-esteem.

Straight teeth allow for proper oral hygiene by providing easier access to the areas around the gums.  Straight teeth help reduce the accumulation of tartar and plaque on the teeth, thereby reducing the total bacterial count in the mouth.

It is estimated that about 80 percent of adult patients who are going through orthodontic treatment with braces are doing so for the first time.

Most adults want less visible options and new technology has been developed to make braces less noticeable.

Invisalign is one alternative to conventional braces.  Most adults can be treated with this method which uses an advanced set of clear aligners to gradually straighten the teeth until the intended results are achieved. Invisalign is a great solution for many people who want to achieve a straighter smile without the unsightly appearance of old-fashioned braces.

Patients can now get results often with less sensitivity in about a year, and in some instances in just three months.

Once your teeth are straightened, your confidence will grow along with your new smile.

Your overall health will be enhanced, your dental health will improve significantly and you will increase the life of your teeth.

Dr Razaq has helped hundreds of her patients to correct their smile.  He is always looking for the latest technology in dental health to provide the best treatment available.
